WELCOME TO THE COAL PIT LEARNING CENTER!
The Mission of Coal Pit Learning Center is to provide an enriching, full-day preschool program to children from low-income families that will help them develop the foundational academic and social skills needed for future success.
Since 1976, our not-for-profit school has been dedicated to building a nurturing and engaging learning environment for students from low-income families. We provide developmental preschool classes as well as excellent childcare programs for the Richmond community.
Coalpit Learning’s Summer Preschool Camp!
Every kid deserves a summer filled with giggles, games, and growing minds—and that’s exactly what we’re serving up at Coalpit Learning’s Summer Preschool Camp!
From messy art to splashy play, story time to snack time, we build joy into every day. And the best part? Our program is designed to be affordable for every family, with a sliding scale and scholarships available.
Because happiness shouldn’t have a price tag—and every little learner deserves a summer to shine.
Let the fun (and learning) begin!
HOW YOU CAN HELP
The curriculum is carefully designed to be intellectually challenging and exciting. Students actively explore subjects such as art, music, science, and constructive play while developing their visual, motor, and pre-reading skills. The Coal Pit staff and faculty are committed to meeting our children’s specific educational needs.
The Center, which is funded almost entirely by private gifts, donations, grants, and subsidized tuition primarily serves three-, four- and five-year-old children from the Lakeside and Glen Allen areas of Henrico County. These children ordinarily would not receive the benefits of a preschool experience.

EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCE
Each session includes educational and socialization activities, concluding with a nutritious lunch. Students are given a chance to explore the areas of music, science, art, and constructive play while developing their visual, motor, and pre-reading skills.
THE COAL PIT PHILOSOPHY
The founders of Coal Pit Learning Center believed that providing low income children with essential social, emotional, and academic skills would give them the confidence and capabilities needed to excel in school, thus enabling them ultimately to enter the work force competitively and to escape from or avoid the cycle of poverty. The central focus of the Coal Pit program is building a positive concept of self in each and every child, based upon the children’s actual achievements in the program. Increased self-control and a positive approach toward learning demonstrate the children’s improved attitude toward life in general as they progress through the program.
